The Christchurch SPCA is shocked a pregnant cat was left inside a chilly bin to suffocate and die.

A Facebook post said it was one of the most "shocking and upsetting" cases the SPCA had seen, after the cat was left inside the chilly bin outside the Christchurch centre's gates recently.

"She unfortunately was not found until the next morning and had suffocated and sadly did not make it."

The organisation says it's heartbroken, and that it could have taken the mother and kittens into its care.

"We want to take this opportunity to remind our community that we are here to help."

The Facebook post sparked outrage amongst animal lovers, who expressed their disgust and sadness.

"How heartbreaking and horrible that must have been for the staff members to find," one user said.

"It makes me so angry that someone could be so stupid and cruel," another wrote.

A number of recent incidents have seen cats and kittens abandoned in the Christchurch area, the SPCA says.

Anyone who finds themself in a difficult situation with an animal is urged to reach out to the SPCA.
