Restaurant on Auckland's Dominion Rd goes up in flames

Fire crews had to call for backup on their way to a large blaze at a Chinese restaurant on Auckland's Dominion Rd overnight.

It started in the kitchen of Wangda restaurant in Mt Roskill just before 10pm on Sunday, on the second floor of a block of businesses.

Assistant Area Commander Stephan Sosich says they worked until midnight to contain the fire.

"Crews worked very hard - it was very hot, from what I hear - and they have managed to contain the fire to the restaurant. But it has got into the ceiling space, which is shared across the whole building."

Twelve fire engines were used to dowse the flames.

"The crews were faced with a very large fire... they called for backup before they even arrived."

No one was injured.
