Radio host Sean Plunket has slammed our "Halloween problem", saying New Zealand should get rid of the festivity.

"It's not magical, it's crap," Plunket said on Magic Talk on Thursday afternoon.

He said he strongly disagreed with the holiday that gives sugary treats to children.

"We should do better and give our kids better than a celebration of type-2 diabetes once a year," Plunket told listeners.

In place of celebrating the tradition, which is particularly popular in the United States, Plunket suggested replacing it with something more relevant to our New Zealand.

"We should get rid of it and we should form a new set of cultural celebrations around Matariki," he said.

"And that's not me being woke, that's me being practical."

It's not the first time Plunket has made controversial comments.

Earlier this month he lashed out at TJ Perenara, saying the All Black was "getting a little woke" for his liking.

Perenara had said he believed the All Blacks would welcome a gay rugby player. But Plunket though expressing an opinion about such things was not part of the halfback's job description.

"You pass the ball very well, but I am not interested in your views on all these other things."

Both Perenara's wife and mother hit back at the radio host, saying they were proud Perenara was "more than just a rugby player".
