Blaze leaves Canterbury town's restaurant 'extensively damaged'

Firefighters have extinguished a blaze in the small Canterbury town of Tekapo which left a large building "extensively damaged".

Fire crews were called to the Tekapo Tavern and Reflections Restaurant just before 1pm on Sunday after the fire broke out.

Four appliances were sent to battle the blaze, which severely damaged the building. Video from the scene showed a wall of flames taller than the building raging into the air.

The fire is now out, however Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews will be dampening down hot spots for next hour or so.

Investigator will be there tomorrow to examine the cause of the blaze.

"There's no indication of the cause of the fire, and there have been no injuries," FENZ southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris told Stuff.
