An elderly woman has been "smashed, bashed and left for dead" in what her family describes as a violent home invasion in Levin.

On Saturday, the 90-year-old opened her Bath St door to young girls after one said she needed to use the toilet. She was then allegedly brutally attacked before they stole items from the house.

"I'm sitting here in ABSOLUTE Shock. Our children's grandmother, my husband's mother, my mother-in-law. 90 years young," one family member posted to Facebook.

"Opened her door to [two] young girls, one needing to use the toilet.... smashed bashed and left for dead.
