Car goes over bank edge at Port Hills

One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Summit Rd in Christchurch at 11pm on Wednesday.

Another person is in a critical condition, after the car went over a bank on the Port Hills.

Summit Rd remains closed Thursday morning around the crash scene between Bridle Path and Dyers Pass Rd as emergency services work to retrieve the car.

Walking tracks in the vicinity are also closed.

It has been a busy night across the country for ambulance crews, with at least three major car accidents.

A person is in a serious condition after falling from a moving vehicle in Te Kowhai, north of Hamilton at around 6:30pm.

A few hours later St John was called to a crash on State Highway 6in Granity, West Coast, where one person was seriously hurt.

A third person has serious injuries after a crash on Cust Rd in north Canterbury.
