Climbers who died near Queenstown were Australian citizens

Two climbers who died on The Remarkables mountain range on Wednesday were from Australia, police say.

The pair have been named as 62-year-old Brett Lentfer, and 44-year-old James Spaile.

It has been confirmed they fell hundreds of metres down a cliff while on a guided climb.

"Our condolences are with the family and friends of both men," a police statement said.

Meanwhile it's been confirmed the victims were clients of guiding company Aspiring Guides.

Company director Vickie Sullivan said they were "devastated" and extended their deepest sympathies.

"Our immediate concern is for the families who have lost their loved ones and to support them in any way we can.

"We are also working closely with the NZ Police and NZ Mountain Guides Association to aid their investigation around the circumstances of the incident and are conducting our own internal review."

Sullivan thanked emergency services for their quick response to the tragedy.
