A cyclist is seriously injured after being hit by a fleeing driver in West Auckland.

Police say they saw a "suspicious vehicle" leaving an address of interest in Massey on Monday evening.

When police tried to pull the car over, it drove off and police gave chase.

During the chase, the fleeing driver hit a cyclist on Don Buck Road and drove off without stopping.

The cyclist was taken to hospital.

A 25-year-old man was arrested several kilometres from the crash and charged with multiple driving offences.

He will appear in Waitakere District Court on Tuesday morning.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified, and police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
