A Kiwi man famous for having the word 'Devast8' tattooed on his face has been sentenced to 10 months in jail.

Mark Cropp made headlines in 2017 for complaining that he couldn't get a job because of his tattoo.

NZME reports that in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday, he said he'd been beaten up in prison while awaiting sentencing for several charges including intimidating behaviour and presenting a fake pistol. Cropp has been held in custody since May.

He was earlier offered laser surgery to have the tattoo - which covers the lower half of his face - removed, but declined after one session.

He told Judge David Saunders on Wednesday however he now wants to get the tattoo taken off, reports Stuff.

The father-of-two said he wanted to "turn his life around for his kids".

Asked by Judge Saunders about his tattoo, Cropp said, "It's just my nickname," NZME reported.

"I thought it would be cool."
