A Geraldine kebab store may face legal action from McDonald's after the franchise discovered the shop was using a similar logo.

A sign promoting the yet-to-be-opened Kebab World included an upside-down version of the well-known golden arches, and the store has one week to remove all signage.

McDonald's New Zealand spokesman Simon Kenny told Stuff a letter had been sent to Ricky Dhaliwal, the owner of Kebab World, requesting he stop using the logo.

"Lawyers acting on behalf of McDonald's sent a letter to the business on November 22 advising the business of the actions required to avoid legal action in the High Court.

"This includes permanently removing and destroying the signage and marketing collateral," he said to Stuff.

Kenny said McDonald's had given Dhaliwal a week "to take the actions required".

Dhaliwal hasn't received the letter from McDonald's, but admitted he could see the similarities between his sign and the fast-food giant's, he told Stuff.

He wanted to make a 'W' signifying the 'world' in his shop's name.
