Huge fire near Dunedin under control

The owner of a family farm where a blaze raged through bushland say they are grateful for the fire service's quick action.

It broke out at Bucklands Crossing, north of Dunedin, at 11:30am on Friday, but has since been brought under control.

Farm owner Carolyn McAra told Newshub the fire is burning through pine trees.

"They've [Firefghtrers] been really good," she said. "I'm not sure how long they'll be here - it's going to take a while by the sounds of it.

"It's very lucky it hasn't spread any further than what it has."

Earlier, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson told Newshub there was concern about gusting winds in the area.

Four helicopters were in operation, the spokesperson said, with ground crews deployed to help tackle the blaze, which at its peak was 16-hectares in size.
