Jessie Heke-Gray jailed indefinitely for '10 days of horrible offending'

A Northland rapist has been jailed indefinitely for repeated brutal attacks on a woman he met on Facebook.

Jessie Heke-Gray had only been out of prison for three months when he carried out what the judge called "10 days of horrible offending".

Heke-Gray spent most of his sentencing today pulling gang signs at Newshub's cameras.

Already a convicted rapist, he was in the dock again.

This time over what he did to a woman he met on Facebook in 2016.

He invited her from Wellington to see him in Whangarei.

When she arrived he demanded she drive him to a nearby beach, and it was there that his torment began.

"You then assaulted the victim putting your hands all over her face, squeezing her face, slapping her and pulling her shirt up biting her stomach," Justice Whata said.

He then brutally sexually violated her.

The assaults continued later that night and over the days ahead.

At a local motel, Heke-Gray barricaded the room and again violated the woman.

"You told her, quote, if you ever cross me or dob me into the police, I will blow the back of your head off," Justice Whata said.

After 10 days of terror which including being raped while battling a medical condition, the woman required help from a sexual health clinic.

It was there staff realised what was happening.

She managed to escape and he was later arrested.

Today, she told the court how terrifying it all was, saying she felt extreme fear for her life and felt trapped like she couldn't leave.

She also thought she'd never see her family again, and said the didn't believe Heke-Gray could be returned to society because he would continue to be a danger to women.

In her victim impact statement the woman told the court that she still fears Heke-Gray's family will find her on social media and seek retribution for his arrest.

These attacks were carried out just months after he was released from prison for another rape in 2008.

"It is not clear to me that you are at all ready to rehabilitate," said Justice Whata.

"Indeed I remained concerned about your ongoing denial of the offending and of the previous offending."

Justice Whata sentenced Jessie Heke-Gray to preventive detention.

He won't be eligible for any parole hearing for seven years.
