Kiwi father gets tattoo to match his son's open heart surgery scars

Kiedis Dickson is 9-years-old and he's spent his life in and out of hospitals.

Born with multiple congenital heart defects, Kiedis's life is one of restrictions.

"I love skateboarding - not really allowed to do that. I love biking, not allowed to that; I love swimming, not allowed to do that. Basically everything I love, I'm not allowed to do," he told The Project.

Next Thursday, he will have his seventh major surgery. It's his second open-heart surgery, and it'll leave some gnarly scars.

But while his dad Adam can't take away the pain, he's determined to show his son he doesn't have to go through it alone.

To show he's not alone, Adam now has a permanent reminder of his bond with his son.

Adam has gotten Kiedis's surgery scars tattooed on his own chest, so the pair can match.

"It's there for life-like these kids, their scars are there for life too," he said on Friday.

"He's had every needle, every finger prick," said Keidis.

"Everything that I've had except open heart surgery cause he can't have that obviously."

Adam says the tattoo is about showing he will always be there for his son.

"It's there for life-like these kids, their scars are there for life too," he said on Friday.

"I'm not the world's greatest dad; I'm not the world's worst dad either but to be there for your kids, that's what it's all about right?"
