A Kiwi who fell to his death from the 15th floor of a Gold Coast apartment building has been named as 22-year-old Christchurch man Liam Kearns.

Kearns' fall occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning and has been ruled an accident by police.

Emergency services were called to the Breakers North apartments in Surfers Paradise at 12:30am (local time). Kearns was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to local media, Kearns is understood to have moved to Australia a short time ago, and had been working as a bartender at a local surf club.

President of the Northcliffe Surf Club Dave Shields said the death was a "terrible tragedy".

"Liam had only been us a short time but was a nice young guy and valued member of our team," Shields told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

The accident comes at the start of the Gold Coast's annual Schoolies festivities, where school leavers celebrate their graduation from high school.

These celebrations have seen multiple accidents, with two young people falling from balconies over the last three years.

Investigators are reportedly looking into whether Kearns may have been hanging off the balcony at the time of the accident.

The Kiwi's death has now been referred to the coroner.
