As it happened: Police speak after hostage-taker killed in Tauranga

Police held a stand-up after shooting a man who took three children hostage in Tauranga on Sunday.

Superintendent Andy McGregor, Bay of Plenty District Commander, is addressing media at 5:30pm after the man's death.

Police said they had been called to a property in Bellevue just after midnight after the man threatened his partner with a knife.

She managed to escape and call police but left three children in the house, along with the man.

When police arrived they entered the property to find the man holding a large machete to the throat of one of the children. Police then withdrew, allowing one child to escape.

Due to "grave concern" for the children's safety, police re-entered the house shortly after 3pm, where they were confronted by the man.

He was shot by police and died at the scene. The two children who had been kept hostage are safe and uninjured.

This livestream is now over.
