NIWA captures incredible time-lapse of storm over Auckland

A rainy Auckland day has resulted in a stunning time-lapse of rain sweeping across the city.

A NIWA camera atop the SkyTower captured the heavy rain bucketing down on Tuesday afternoon.

Metservice said an "unstable air mass" sitting over the North Island is to blame for the stormy weather.

It brings the risk of thunderstorms, hail and rain in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Waikato, with the unstable conditions in this area lasting throughout the afternoon.

"There's a few heavy showers and thunderstorms sprinkled around the North Island today, but Wednesday is looking dry," Metservice said.

Wednesday will be a mix of sun and cloud across the western North Island, but it's forecast to remain relatively dry, reports Weather Watch.

A cold front will move across the lower South Island on Wednesday afternoon, reaching the North Island on Wednesday night.

Don't get too excited though - rain is forecast to hit again on Thursday.

Starting on Wednesday morning, the West Coast of the South Island will be under heavy rain warnings and strong wind watches.
