Palmerston North comedians on a mission to honour the late John Clarke

Two comedians from Palmerston North are on a mission to honour the city's funniest and most famous resident - John Clarke.

Clarke made his name in the '70s, portraying laid-back, singlet-loving farmer Fred Dagg.

But by the late 1970s, he was living in Australia, and when he died of a heart attack in 2017, the Australians claimed him as their own.

Now, to remind us that Clarke's real home is Palmerston North - aka the City of Laughs - two local comics are spearheading a campaign to make him a memorial.

To raise funds, they're hoping to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Fred Daggs in a singlet and gumboots the world has ever seen.

But how many Daggs can they muster?

Dylan Stewart and Nathan Cross spoke to the Project about their plans.
