Police remove remaining Greenpeace protesters from oil ship

Greenpeace says resistance will continue as its occupation of an oil vessel in Timaru comes to an end.

The organisation says the final 10 demonstrators were removed by police on Tuesday.

But it's vowing more resistance, claiming hundreds throughout the country will take part in a climate uprising in New Plymouth, where the vessel is heading next week.

Greenpeace climate campaigner Amanda Larsson said the occupation "successfully" ended any hope that oil company OMV had of "conducting their reckless drilling programme".

"Their oil rig may be lurking out of reach over the horizon, but we have brought the resistance to them and alerted the nation to risks we face.

"This resistance is only set to continue."

Protesters boarded the ship on Sunday as part of the Greenpeace campaign to stop oil exploration.

Greenpeace says it's hoped their actions will stop the oil company altogether.

On Monday Magic Talk radio host Ryan Bridge slammed the protesters, saying authorities needed to "just get in there and get them out".

"Get out the bolt cutters and tasers if you have to," Bridge said on his Monday show.
