Recovery operation for climber's body underway near Queenstown

A second body has been recovered from The Remarkables mountain range near Queenstown.

Police say two climbers died after falling around 600 metres from the side of the cliff just before midday on Wednesday. One of the bodies was recovered the same day.

Alpine Cliff Rescue and police headed up the range on Thursday morning and recovered the second body shortly after 8am.

The range the climbers fell from is known as the Grand Traverse.

One part of the trek involves climbing an exposed ridge with a near-vertical drop of 2 kilometres down to Queenstown.

According to Aspiring Guides website, the track is suitable for people with "a head for heights" and hiking experience.

The accident is being investigated by Worksafe and police are contacting the climber's next of kin.
