Summery weather to give way to rain, thunderstorms

The summery weather across New Zealand is about to take a turn for the worse with rain and possible thunderstorms rolling in.

The central North Island will bear the brunt of the wet weather on Thursday evening with Taupō, Taihape and parts of Hawkes Bay all forecast with rain and a moderate risk of thunderstorms.

On Friday morning, scattered showers will hit Northland, Auckland and Coromandel with the potential for heavy rain, reports Metservice.

There's also the potential for thunderstorms.

As well as the rain and thunder, a cool change will roll across the country on Friday.

Temperatures in the South Island will drop by more than 12 degrees, according to Weather Watch.

The weekend will be cooler than the last weeks, with a few heavy downpours inland.

Next week the real weather will hit the country. A large storm in the Southern Ocean will bring heavy rain to the West Coast and gales to the east and through Cook Strait.

Good news for the North Island though - it's further away from the low, so may not be as affected by the dramatic weather.
