iPhone users may need to be on alert after many New Zealanders reported receiving a suspicious message from an unusual number this morning.

The text which comes from the mobile number 365, tells the iPhone user their Apple ID has been temporarily locked.

The message then suggests the mobile carrier, to avoid loss of services, click the link within the text to verify their details.

The matter has since been reported to international IT security agency FraudWatch who have taken down any related articles, fake websites, and online profiles, reported the New Zealand Herald.

Apple has advised anyone who receives the message not to enter any personal information and delete the message immediately.

In August BNZ released a study that stated Kiwis are being hit by a "tidal wave" of scammers.

According to the study, 81 percent of New Zealanders have been targeted by a scam.

Martin Cocker, chief executive of Netsafe, told Newshub earlier this year that the quickest way to avoid falling for scams is to do your own research.

"Whenever you are presented with an offer online, independently research it. If you get sent an email and it takes you directly to some site, it's best to exit that and do a quick Google search for that business name - even type the word 'scam' into the search and see what you get."
