The weekend is going to be wet for parts of the country as typical unsettled spring weather returns.

Areas likely to get heavy rain and possible gales are Nelson, Buller, Westland, and Fiordland.

"Some heavy falls are likely over the upper half of the North Island on Sunday as well as northern and western parts of the South Island," MetService says.

Forecaster WeatherWatch says cooler air will arrive in the country on Sunday and Monday.

"On Monday there is a temperature drop coming which goes nationwide by Tuesday - but fades as early as Wednesday," WeatherWatch said in a statement.

NIWA's weather forecasting arm is calling it an "active weather weekend" with rain, wind, thunderstorms as well as very warm, humid conditions.

The weekend starts off nicely for Christchurch with 27C on Saturday but Sunday brings rain and southwest winds. Similarly, Dunedin will be 25C Saturday and rain on Sunday.

Further north Auckland will get rain both days as will Wellington.
