Weather: Rainy Monday ahead as cold fronts unleash on New Zealand

New Zealand is in for a wet Monday as a series of cold fronts move over the country.

WeatherWatch says showers will turn into rain in the afternoon for the upper and western North Island before retreating back into showers by evening.

There is more heavy rain for the West Coast of the South Island, which has already been inundated by deluges.

"Morning heavy rain for the West Coast of the South Island then easing to showers and some sun breaks through, winds from the west or southwest," WeatherWatch says.

MetService says in the past two weeks, 1.2m of rain has fallen at Mt Browning, over 800mm at Arthur's Pass and over 700mm at Franz Josef.

"In the past two weeks these West Coast stations have had as much rain as some of our urban areas get in a typical year," MetService says on Facebook.

"On average Albert Park in Auckland gets about 1.2m of rain, Napier receives about 800mm and Blenheim about 700mm."

Nelson, Marlborough and Southland will also have morning rain. Canterbury and Otago can expect possible thunderstorms and hail.
