Weather: 'Unstable' conditions bring hail, thunder and rain to New Zealand

A series of fronts are expected to create 'unstable' conditions for the country, bringing thundery downpours and strong winds to parts of the country.

Thunderstorms and hail are expected to plague most of the North Island on Tuesday, with the possibility of hail and gales in exposed places.

According to MetService, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay will be waking up to thunderstorms on Tuesday morning, as a front moves across the east of the North Island. The thundery conditions could include localised heavy downpours, and will continue throughout Tuesday.

A trough brings the risk of thunderstorms, hail and rain in Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and Waikato on Tuesday morning, with the unstable conditions in this area lasting throughout the afternoon.

The Bay of Plenty and Taupo can also expect massive thundery downpours with the possibility of hail.

A rain warning is in place for Westland, Otago and Canterbury for Wednesday and again this weekend. There is also the possibility of severe gales in this area.

WeatherWatch reports that the lower South Island is expected to stay dry, with a small possibility of a 'shower or two' in the West Coast.
