Weather: Temperatures skyrocket across New Zealand

Kiwis have been enjoying the springtime sun as temperatures skyrocketed across several regions today.

Kawerau and Cheviot had the top temperatures nationwide on Sunday, with a balmy 33.1 degrees in the Canterbury town of Cheviot taking out New Zealand's ninth warmest November temperature on record.

Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty reached a scorching 34.5 degrees - the third hottest November temperature of all-time, according to MetService.

Rayna from Southland sent in evidence of sweltering 35-degree temperatures in the rural town of Tuatapere.

NIWA shared imagery from their outer space high-resolution satellite, showing "nearly maximum solar insolation [sunshine]" nationwide. Hot air from across the ditch compounded the weekend's welcome warmth.

Things even heated up for the bottom of the South Island, with Dunedin City recording a 24-degree temperature at 3am on Sunday due to a high north-west flow. Central Christchurch Street sizzled away with a 32-degree high during the early afternoon.

The sun also shone on Saturday with near-record and record highs across the South Island, with Clyde and Alexandra reaching 32.5 and 32.2 degrees respectively.

New Zealand's hottest November temperature on record was 35.6 degrees at Lake Coleridge in inland Canterbury back in 1920. Gisborne is the runner-up for a 34.8-degree high in 2016.

Yet the sun may be short-lived for some, with MetService attributing "an unusually wet month for western areas" to prevailing north-west winds.
