Wellington driver u-turns on motorway, drives wrong direction towards oncoming car

A Wellington driver has been caught on camera making a sudden u-turn on the city's motorway, before driving back along the one-way road in the wrong direction.

The footage was reportedly taken on Saturday when an incident blocked off Wellington's Terrace Tunnel and backed traffic up hundreds of metres.

NZTA tweeted that the tunnel was closed for just over an hour in both directions due to a crash

The video begins with a white SUV mid-way through a three-point-turn, likely not wanting to get caught up in the traffic jam ahead.

After roughly 20 seconds of attempting the turn, the vehicle begins driving away from the tunnel and the bumper-to-bumper traffic into the face of another car, which also begins to reverse to avoid the gridlock.

Both cars then turn to take an off-ramp.

The video has been shared on Reddit, where it quickly got users talking.

"The terrace tunnel was closed on Saturday afternoon as someone managed to flip their car. Not Condoning the whole driving the wrong way scenario, but you can see everyone is taking the terrace off-ramp for that reason (sic)," said one person.

"I totally get people turning around if they know that the situation - as long as they take the proper precautions," said another.

But not everyone supported the Wellington driver's move.

"What are the proper precautions for reversing down a motorway?! Honestly, you should have your license removed."

"If the tunnel is closed and you have passed the off-ramp, you stay in the queue, unless the Police or official traffic management personal tell you otherwise (and have safety systems in place)."
