Police are appealing for information after a 60-year-old woman was seriously injured when an object smashed through her windscreen and struck her face while she drove.

The incident near the South Island's Luggate township happened at about 3:30pm on Friday and led to the woman receiving serious facial injuries which required her to go to hospital.

The object is described by police as an "old brass diesel cap", but police aren't sure where it came from.

"The cap is 90mm in diameter, weighs 672g, and has a scalloped edge for gripping and a male thread pattern," police say.

"Police would like to speak to anyone who may have information about where the object may have originated from."

Officers want to hear from anyone driving on the Luggate-Cromwell Rd who may have seen the object on the road or saw it come from another vehicle. Anyone with dashcam footage is especially encouraged to get in touch.

The police can be contacted on 105 and the file number 191130/9827 should be quoted
