One person has been arrested near a Hamilton school for allegedly carrying a weapon.

Armed police responded to reports after the person was spotted around Churchill Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

"We had a report of a person who reportedly had a weapon who we now have in custody... our enquiries are ongoing," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

According to Maeroa Intermediate School's Facebook page, a member of the public had come onto the grounds and was making threats.

The school went into lockdown shortly before 2pm. It has since been lifted.

"Everyone is safe," the school said.

"Thank you to the police for their quick response, their great communication with us and for resolving the situation."
