Auckland man demands answers after third vehicle crashes through his fence

An Auckland man is demanding answers after a vehicle came crashing through his fence for the third time in 10 years.

A disabled taxi van smashed into Paul Khan's front yard in New Windsor on Sunday morning, swerving right past crash barriers installed to stop exactly that from happening.

Khan says he woke up at 7:30am to what sounded like thunder - only to find lightning had struck for a third time in the same place.

"[It sounded] just like someone picked up a big large weight and bang, dropped it," he told Newshub. "So I viewed the vehicle. When it came over the fence, it flew."

The disabled taxi van is a write-off. The fence is in splinters and its railings are mangled. At least Khan's pride and joy - his boat - was untouched.

"I hope he learns a lesson - but it's a very expensive lesson," he says.

Khan didn't get to speak to the trapped driver, as he was more worried about pulling him from the wreckage.

The driver is now in hospital with moderate injuries, where police are waiting to interview him.

"He probably lost his concentration or had a blink of an eye," Khan told Newshub.

Khan has described his home as "the crash corner" of New Windsor, claiming it has gotten worse since the road was widened to four lanes.

The crash barrier was installed after two other vehicles went through Khan's fence. He says he warned the council it wasn't long enough.

"[From a] safety point of view why don't you extend it, you know. Strengthen it, extend it, but no, it just goes on deaf ears," he says.

Khan's neighbour has also had a gutsful.

"Yes, it's happened before," they told Newshub. "I've had the fence further down gone, and I've also had cars come from that direction and write cars off on my front lawn."

Auckland Council says it will review correspondence with Khan on Monday.

Auckland Transport says it's waiting for the police report on the accident, which will determine if there is an issue with the road.
