Auckland rabbit owners fear notorious bunny burglar may strike again

A former finance executive has been exposed as a bunny burglar responsible for a spate of rabbit thefts in Auckland.

Fergus McMahon was sentenced in May - but it's not the first time he's been hauled through the courts over his fixation with bunnies.

CCTV vision shows Fergus McMahon creeping onto one victim's property before sifting through a number of hutches.

Six of Bronwyn Dent's rabbits were stolen in a similar way back in 2016.

"It is just the most horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach that your animals are gone and you don't know about their welfare," she told Newshub.

She wasn't the only victim. Several breeders across Auckland were also targeted.

Fergus McMahon was later arrested. After pleading guilty to 10 burglaries, he was sentenced to four months of community detention in May.

Until now, his name has been kept a secret.

"This person has to take responsibility publicly for what he's done... it was just a fantastic feeling because it has been very frustrating," Bronwyn says.

McMahon's targets were never random. He found his victims online.

"I got an email one day through Trade Me from Fergus McMahon saying he'd love to bring his daughter and pick a rabbit, so we set up a time and a place," Bronwyn says.

He never showed up, and two weeks later, her rabbits were gone.

Newshub tried visiting an address in Taupaki, a locality in Auckland's Rodney District, registered to Fergus McMahon - but the property has been rented out to tenants.

Two of the victims he stole rabbits from say they believe police searched the property when he used to live here and understand they found rabbit water-feeding bottles - but no bunnies.

This wasn't McMahon's first run of bunny burgling.

In 2005, he went by the name of Brendan McMahon and was arrested in Sydney after dead or dying animals were found in and around his office. According to police reports, the evidence suggested indications of torture, mutilation and bestiality.

Although a charge of bestiality was dropped, McMahon was convicted and jailed for torturing 17 rabbits and a guinea pig - convictions that were later quashed due to mental health issues.

Six months since his sentencing on these latest charges, McMahon has now served his four months of community detention - leaving breeders scared he could strike again.
