Auckland Transport says four more red-light safety cameras will be installed at high-risk intersections in Auckland to save lives.

The decision comes after a high number of sometimes fatal incidents by cars running red lights.

The company revealed, between 2014 and 2018, there were 83 fatalities or serious injuries due to cars running red lights.

"Dangerous driving behaviour is why we continue to install more red-light safety cameras."

Mayor Phil Goff has also weighed in on the decision.

"The growth in deaths and serious injuries on Auckland roads is unacceptable.

"Red light cameras and stringent enforcement against running red lights protect people and saves lives."

Goff said the decision is not intended to raise revenue.

"That's why we’re advertising where the red-light cameras are."

Executive General Manager of Service Delivery, Andrew Allen said red-light cameras help make Auckland’s roads safer as some drivers treat red lights like a challenge.

The cameras, added to the first four which have been installed in recent weeks comes to a total of eight red-light safety cameras at high-risk intersections in Auckland.
