Controversial Tuia 250 tour comes to an end in Gisborne

The Tuia 250 commemorative voyage has officially come to an end after 10 weeks of touring the country.

The flotilla has made its final stop at Mahia on Tuesday but it was missing its most controversial member.

The replica of Captain James Cook's Endeavour was nowhere to be seen among the flotilla - it's already sailing back to Australia.

The ship's 10-week-tour has been marred by controversy with demonstrators awaiting its arrival in Wellington and Gisborne, protesting what many consider a symbol of European colonisation and the suppression of Māori culture.
