A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has struck south of Turangi.

The quake, which GeoNet says was located 40km south-east of Turangi in New Zealand's Central Plateau, hit at a depth of 45km at 7:12pm on Saturday. It was considered a "light" shake by GeoNet.

Within minutes of the quake, more than 2800 people had reported it on GeoNet. They were located as far away as Auckland, but the majority came from the central North Island and Taranaki.

"I felt this in New Plymouth," wrote one person on Twitter.

"I felt it but it was just a little shake that's all."

"Ooh that was a nice lil wobble in palmy."

There have been no immediate reports of damage or injury.

"This was quite a typical quake for the North Island, and just a reminder that we live in a shaky part of the world. Remember to Drop, Cover and Hold during earthquakes," GeoNet said.

It follows a strong 5.3 magnitude earthquake south of Gisborne on Tuesday. That quake had a depth of 28km. GeoNet said at the time that it had no connection to the recent White Island eruption.
