It's believed fireworks caused a large vegetation fire in the Coromandel Peninsula overnight.

At its peak, around 60 firefighters and two helicopters with monsoon buckets were battling the two-hectare blaze on Wharf Road in Colville.

It was contained around midnight, but hotspots are being dampened on Sunday morning.

A total fire ban is in place for the area.

Fire and Emergency are urging people to avoid using fireworks over summer.
