A man has died and another is in a serious condition after being swept off rocks while fishing in Dunedin.

Emergency services were called to Cape Saunders at around 4pm on Saturday.

A helicopter located the pair and winched them on board, but one of them was already dead.

A witness told NZME he was hit into the water by a "freak wave".
