A Hastings driver has mowed down a group of pedestrians in a horror hit-and-run on Saturday.

Three people were waiting to cross Maraekakaho Road at around 9:30am when a vehicle travelling on the wrong side of the road drove onto the footpath and struck the group. The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

One person was transported to hospital in a critical condition while two others were seriously injured and also required medical treatment.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area of the intersection between Maraekakaho Road and Francis Hicks Avenue at the time of the crash.

The vehicle involved was an older model silver Mazda 323, which was seen heading south down Maraekakaho Road.

The vehicle would have sustained damage to the bonnet and roof area.
