The parents of late social media comedian Johnny 'Danger' Bennett have laughed off a man from China claiming the 'vortex' as his own.

Liu Shichao, known on social media sites as Pangzai, shared a video to Twitter in November of himself skulling his beer in identical fashion to that made famous by Bennett.

In the clip, which has since gone viral, he said he was calling the move 'the tornado' and included a tutorial.

Gina Mason, Bennett's mum, told Newshub on Tuesday it wasn't the first time she had heard of another person getting in on something made popular by her son.

"There's always someone trying," she said. "Often things he did, people would try to get in on. It will always be Johnny's to us."

Mason said Danger first bought the 'vortex' home "quite a while ago" and would regularly perform the trick as a showpiece.

"That and the 'Danger Swig', he'd always do at a party," she recalls.

Videos on Bennett's social media can be seen from more than five years ago showing the stuntman performing the drinking technique.

Over the past weeks, the video of Pangazi using the same style was widely-covered by international media praising his "signature style of drinking".

But his video has now caught the attention of Kiwis who are determined to defend Danger's trademark move.

"So are you guys going to act like Johnny Danger didn't do this first?" one Danger fan wrote on Twitter.

"Literally everyone in New Zealand [has] been doing this for ages," another person stated.

"You ever checked Snapchat on a Friday or Saturday night? This is normal in New Zealand!" another fan wrote on Facebook.

One person took to Twitter bluntly stating: "New Zealanders will be laughing at this."

An Instagram page, NewZealand_vortekes, is entirely dedicated to the drinking trick, displaying Kiwis who submit their "long white or beer" vortexes. It currently boasts more 5500 followers.

Pangzai has grown his following by posting videos of different ways to drink large amounts of alcohol.

Bennett, who was a popular creator of content on social media with his own beer line, passed away on April 25 2018 in a motorbike accident.
