Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, deputy commissioner John Tims and director of Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups, Sarah Stuart-Black, addressed the media after a volcanic eruption on White Island.
The press conference was held shortly after 6:30pm on Monday at the Beehive Theatrette in Parliament.
One person has been confirmed dead and St John has confirmed there are several serious injuries.
Around 50 people were on White Island when it erupted on Monday afternoon and many of them remain unaccounted for.
The volcanic eruption began at around 2:11pm, GNS says.
