As it happened: Police, Coroner give update on White Island eruption response

A press conference will be held in Whakatane at 10:30am featuring police and the Chief Coroner.

Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall and Acting Assistant Commissioner Bruce Bird will discuss the identification and coronial process following the eruption.

Victim post-mortems are expected to begin on Wednesday, with the confirmed death toll sitting at six. 

Eight people are missing on White Island following Monday's eruption. They are presumed to be dead.

Another 30 are in hospitals around New Zealand, suffering a range of minor to critical injuries. Some with severe burns aren't expected to survive.
