Five people are dead after a volcanic eruption on White Island.
Deputy Police Commissioner John Tims told media on Monday night police do not know how many people remain trapped on the island.
Around 50 people were on the island at the time of the explosion.
Tims confirmed police had rescued 23 people but more remained trapped on the island.
