Atrocious weather has struck the lower North Island, following intense downpours causing severe flooding, bridge washouts and slips in some South Island regions.
Part of State Highway 58 near Porirua is closed following heavy rain there, and there are power outages in nearby Tirau Bay and Plimmerton.
The wastewater treatment plant has overflowed, according to Mayor Anita Barker.
Westland
On the South Island's West Coast, there is now limited access to parts of State Highway 6.
The road from Wanaka to Haast will be open to one lane until 4pm, and essential vehicles - including residents' cars - will be allowed from Hokitika to Harihari.
Timaru
People in the Timaru district face another day of being stranded, as the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) waits for water to recede before tackling bridge repairs.
The Rangitata River has submerged part of State Highway 1 as well as the alternative, inland route.
NZTA spokesperson Pete Connors said they're likely to stay shut for at least another 36 hours.
Otago
Sandbags were stacked around Queenstown's Lake Wakatipu shoreline to help prevent flooding from rising water level concerns.
Lake Wanaka's water level also rose, and the famous tree in the lake was covered in more water than normal.
