One injured, school put in lockdown after Hastings firearms incident

A man is in hospital after being shot by police in Hastings.

Police received reports of a man threatening a staff member at Flaxmere Primary School.

The school was put into lockdown at around 2:14pm on Tuesday as a response, police say.

Police believed the man was carrying a firearm and shot him once.

He was immediately given medical care and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

"The students were kept safe throughout the incident," a police spokesperson says.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified and an investigation is on-going.

Police cordons are still in place for forensic examinations.
