Only in New Zealand: Commuter turns to speedboat to make way through flooding havoc

Forget waiting for flooding to subside before commuting. Video has captured one person using their speedboat to get themselves from a to b.

The video was posted to social media and is believed to have been captured on the edge of Lake Wānaka. The lake's rising levels caused widespread flooding at the weekend.

Jorge Moraes shared the video on his Instagram page on Saturday and it was also posted to Reddit.

"The guy leaves the lake and comes on to the street," Moraes said on Instagram.

Commenters on Reddit were quick to recognise that the video looked like it was captured in Wanaka.

"You can tell it's Wanaka by all the trees in the water," one wrote.

For many residents, the video will shed light on the severe flooding that hit the South Island and parts of the North Island at the weekend. Lake Wānaka at one stage had risen to near-record levels.

Weather in the Wānaka area was expected to clear from Sunday.

The public is advised to stay out of the water on the foreshore of lakes Wakatipu in Queenstown and Wānaka to avoid potential hazards, the local council said in a statement on Sunday.

On the east coast, Timaru residents and others stranded in the area are being urged to hold tight as crews work hard to get the route to Christchurch reopened.

The town remains cut off from the north after the weekend storm washed out roads and bridges.

Timaru District Council spokesperson Stephen Doran told Newshub the road will hopefully be open within 24 hours.

"We would ask people not to drive up to the worksite," Doran said, referring to the closures in place at State Highway 1 and 72 at Rangitata, north of Timaru.
