A Palmerston North woman is appealing to the public for help after a group of teenagers allegedly hit her cat with their car and sped off, pulling the fingers as they did so.

Natelle Smith says it was around 9:30pm on Thursday evening that the carload of teens in a gold Subaru ran over her pregnant tabby cat Lilly in their suburb of Takaro.

She took to Facebook to share the horrifying tale, saying the boys cheered as they hit the cat, then "came back around and did the fingers to us as we were trying to pick her up".

Smith told NZME she wasn't sure if they swerved to hit the cat, but their reactions proved "it wasn't an accident".

"They did the fingers to us - what does that tell you?"

She's now looking for information on the group involved, and is intending on requesting CCTV footage from a nearby dairy to see if she can track them down.

"We're all pretty distraught, as you can imagine," she told NZME.

"It would be different if it was an accident and they took off because they were worried, or anything.

"But the fact that they came back while we were trying to console the children and pick up the cat then they came back and tormented us - no normal people do that."

Newshub has approached Smith for comment.
