Paraglider's epic resuce from 'tricky area' after slamming into forest

A female paraglider walked away uninjured after getting stuck in a tree at Speargrass Flat in Central Otago.

She slammed into a forest about 500 metres up a hill while trying to land at the popular flight park, with her tricky location making rescue efforts more difficult.

Emergency services were sent into a frenzy using a drone to help pinpoint her exact location.

"It's a pretty tricky area, it's an old plantation forest the trees are about 30m high we're unsure if she can be accessed from below or not at this stage," Senior Seargent John Fooks said.

With the use of modern technology, it became clear early on she may be stuck but was uninjured which fellow paragliders confirmed.

"We've had indirect communication with her from people flying over the top, and at this stage, we believe she is uninjured, nevertheless stuck up a tree effectively in her harness," Fooks said.

It's a popular landing pad for paragliders who launch from nearby Coronet Peak.

Patiently waiting to be rescued, the paraglider kept those already on the ground entertained.

She got herself into a comfy position and she's just waited before her feet made it firmly back on the ground.
