Auckland is set to be one of the driest spots in the country this Christmas day, according to MetService.

People living or visiting the North Island for Christmas should rejoice as Wellington, Auckland and Nelson will most likely have the driest weather.

Auckland is set to be cloudy with southward breezes and a high of 22C. Wellington is mostly cloudy with a high of 18C. And Nelson, although mostly cloudy, is set to have a high of 21C.

MetService forecaster Jake Cope says Northland around Auckland looks to be a good spot for Christmas weather.

Meanwhile, Gisborne is predicted to have a rainy Christmas day.

Cope says the west of the North Island including Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, will be struggling to make 20C as it will be quite cloudy with lots of showers.

The South Island is looking rainy as well, with Canterbury and Dunedin both experiencing wet weather.

Canterbury is set to be rainy and cold with a high of 13C. Showers are predicted in Dunedin with a high of 15C.

December is set to be "unsettled", while many will need to wait until January to enjoy "true summer" weather, Weatherwatch says.

However, as the weather is unpredictable, Cope believes some things may change.
