Two bodies found in Papatoetoe, south Auckland

Two people are dead and a child in hospital after an incident in Papatoetoe, south Auckland on Monday.

Police were called to Sunnyside Crescent after receiving a report that a body was located inside a property.

"Police attended the address and located the body of a woman inside a bedroom," a police spokesperson says.

"A child was also located in the room with critical injuries and he has been transported to Starship Hospital.

"A further search of the address revealed the body of a man who was located deceased inside the property's garage."

Police believe the deceased are known to each other. A scene examination is underway and the address has been cordoned off.

The next-door neighbours told Newshub the victims were a tight-knit Indian family, with a mother, father and young boy aged around four.

They saw the child being taken away on a stretcher this morning, with cuts and lacerations to his head. They said he looked lifeless.

The neighbours said he was a high-energy boy, who always kept his mother very busy. They had just been watching the boy play with all his new Christmas toys this week in the backyard.

This news is "way too close to home", one told Newshub.

"We are currently speaking with a number of individuals in relation to this tragic event," police say.

"Police are expected to remain at the scene for the rest of the day."
