Busy night for South Island fire crews

Fire crews in the south were kept busy overnight, as they battled three different infernos.

Emergency services were called to a scrub fire in Lowburn north of Cromwell just after 7pm.

The blaze covered around one hectare and was a threat to surrounding houses, but it was contained.

A shed and vehicle was also a light on Smarts Rd in Rangiora, and crews are still on scene dampening down hotspots. No one was injured.

Firefighters also attended a car fire in Kirwee on Cooks Rd around 11pm, and worked for around five hours to put it out.

A fire claimed the town's tavern on Christmas Eve. Dramatic pictures posted to social media show flames tearing through the two-storey building. It took 60 firefighters to put out. Fire and Emergency said there was no sign the fire was suspicious.
