A driver rescued a young child alone on an Auckland street only seconds before cars raced by.

The dashcam footage, filmed at the intersection of Onehunga's Quadrant Rd and Trafalgar St on Thursday night, shows a small child wandering around by herself on the road, with no adults around.

"I just ran as fast as I could to get her," said the driver, who spoke to NZME on the condition of anonymity.

"She wasn't moving and I was thinking it was probably someone doing a prank with a doll."

Two other people, one of whom was assumed to be the child's parent, then came from a nearby house and grabbed her from the footpath, NZME reports.

It does not appear police were notified of the incident.

"I'm not immediately aware of police attending a job near that location around that time yesterday [Thursday] evening," a spokesman said.
