Fight against Hawke's Bay forest fire enters third day

Firefighters are continuing to fight a forest fire that has been burning in Hawke's Bay since Monday.

Fifty-five firefighters, along with forestry crews from Pan Pac, are working to secure the perimeter of the fire on Wednesday, says Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ).

The fire broke out in a pine forest near Tangoio Settlement Rd, north of Napier.

After burning through 140 hectares on Monday, the fire doubled in size overnight, reaching 350 hectares on Tuesday.

Helicopters are on standby but will only be used if the fire flares up, says FENZ.

Tangoio Settlement Rd at the junction with Waipatiki Rd remains closed, with firefighters warning smoke would be visible in the area over the next few days as the forest burns.

"We ask that people stay away from the area while our personnel work to bring the fire under control," says incident controller Trevor Mitchell.

Mitchell said conditions for fighting the blaze on Wednesday were " favourable".
